Contactless Payments

Contactless Payments

Introducing contactless payments on public transport in Auckland – the first organisation nationwide to bring this into action.
As we prepared for the launch of contactless payments, upgraded technology was required to support the new payment method.
Using our AT ‘taurapa’ design (by local Māori artist, Graeme Tipene), I created the design for all OpenLoop BV600 validators
and pedestals in buses, train stations, and ferry terminals across Auckland
, seeing this project through from concept to completion.
I was involved with external stakeholders throughout the process, on-site for test wraps and installations.

Launching contactless payments was a chance for AT to drive PT usage, embarking on a journey to enable
every Aucklanders’ credit card, phone, and smartwatch, to pay for fares.

3825 bus validator inserts and 225 pedestal full wraps

were installed across the network.

The results from launching our contactless payments was over

1.1 million trips

using contactless payments in the first 5 weeks of launching,
with half a million trips from new public transport users and bringing in

$1.1m in additional revenue.

As seen on…
VISA
American Express
Westpac

Pre-launch

A few months before the ‘More ways to pay your way’ campaign was launched in Auckland, we released the OpenLoop bus validators and pedestals.
I produced collateral to create hype around contactless payments and show Aucklanders that something new is coming soon.
